Publicity Blurb: “So to Canterbury tomorrow I understand? Long as the road is, I have no doubt such a lively and varied company will have many a tale to share - and I should be a fool to send you on your way without being privy to at least a few...”
The Tabard Inn opens its doors to you all! Experience the tales and make merry with the pilgrims who share them. (B.Y.O.Ale.)
Proposal Blurb: One of the greatest works in the history of British Literature, Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales have inspired and influenced the creative world ever since they were written over 600 years ago. Their widespread success, and capacity to entertain contemporary audiences over the years, is down not only to the brilliant writing, but his delightfully sharp insight into the morals, insecurities and weaknesses that are all part of human nature. The tales are quite simply cracking stories! To use their continual relevance to its full potential, we want to present to our audience a selection of our favourite tales, in a variety of forms and genres.
There have been many adaptations of these brilliant tales individually, but we seek to treat this work as a whole. We want not only to stage the tales, but to shine a light on those who tell them, how they are told, and why. The pilgrims through whom Chaucer tells these stories are brilliantly vibrant and thoroughly formed characters in themselves, and are unfortunately absent in many adaptations of his work.
So we are inviting our audience to the Tabard Inn, a tavern on the road to Canterbury, to spend the evening making merry with our pilgrims as they share their stories. Our hope is to immerse our audience in Chaucer’s world, and that this site-specific production will be as much an experience as it is a spectacle.
