Publicity Blurb: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
Proposal Blurb: Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is one of the most celebrated novels of all time, and continues to hold the attention and admiration of readers almost 200 years after it was written. The story focuses on Elizabeth Bennet, one of five daughters in an early 19th century middle-class family whose mother’s soul desire is to see each of her daughters married off.
The arrival of the wealthy, young, and single, Charles Bingley, and his friend Mr Darcy, causes quite a stir in Elizabeth's hometown of Meryton. When Bingley falls in love with the eldest Bennet girl, Jane, all seems to be going well - however the interference Mr Darcy, who wears his prejudice against the lower classes on his sleeve, could pose a problem for the match. Elizabeth must deal with the issues of manners, morals, education, scandal and love in her class-conscious society.
The book is at times funny and at times sad, with twists and turns as Elizabeth comes to better understand the world and the people around her. And at the core of the story is one of literature's most timeless romances.
We aim to create a simple set using theatrical gauze and detailed lighting which will create the wide variety of locations needed, and this will be complimented by beautiful period costume. The cast is large, with an almost equal gender split, and there will be lots of opportunities to get involved backstage as well. This will be a production of the scale Pride and Prejudice truly deserves.
