Adapted from the short stories of the celebrated macabre writer, Edgar Allan Poe, “The System of Dr Tarr & Professor Fether” is a twisted black comedy designed to excite the imagination. The story follows the Narrator's visit to a mental institution in southern France, renowned for its revolutionary “system of soothing”. The play immerses the audience in an enthralling intercourse between the subtlety of a devious intrigue and the flamboyance of unrestrained insanity. Absurd, malicious and decadent with a claustrophobic sense of apprehension, this production will unnerve as much as it will delight.
The works of Edgar Allan Poe submerge the reader in a heavy, yet darkly intricate atmosphere. As a result, this production places great emphasis on the audiovisual aspect using shadow theatre, darkness to enshroud the audience in a claustrophobic niche and a vibrant show of lights and sounds, rendering a symbolic manifestation of lunacy. Despite being themselves rather minimalist and inexpensive, the set and costumes shall serve as a background for the ubiquitous play of light and shadow.
This production intends to rejuvenate a popular classic in an exciting and experimental way. With a very committed and enthusiastic team, we are confident that the result shall be intriguing and enjoyable for a wide scope of audiences.
