Blurbs
Publicity Blurb: An Irishman. An Englishman. An American. One thing in common - imprisonment.
Proposal Blurb: This is an extremely human drama by design. Over the course of nine scenes, all set in a claustrophobic, isolated cell, the focus is the three men – their trials and tribulations under the watchful eye of unseen, unknown but forever present enemies. They struggle to remain sane through conversation and imagination, often crossing over into the absurd. Their personal or nationalistic differences must be fought or even maintained to let them continue as individuals.
What each man chooses to dig out from his past and his person is entirely individual, but demonstrates how humans cope with others and themselves when reduced to mere objects. Over the course of this gripping and involving play the three men hate, love and amuse each other to pass time. What gives the play an edge and unpredictability is their and our knowledge that their moves are being watched, their conversations heard and their future role as hostages being decided.
Costumes are very simple – shorts and t-shirts to signify a stripping of identity and comfort to make the men vulnerable.
The stage design should convey the play's inherent sense of claustrophobia, hence we're intending to create a very regular, square space at the very front centre of the stage, closed off with flats so only the actual cell is present on stage. Dirty and dimly lit (a bare light bulb with basic cover as the only light source), the cell is supposed to reflect the misery of the characters' predicament. We're intending to put a drain at the centre of the cell, ominously suggesting the continuous possibility of torture.
We will fundraise through baking sales and publicise the play with flyers and posters around the University buildings and accommodation.
