Publicity Blurb: Tennessee Williams' emotionally devastating and beautifully judged family saga.
Proposal Blurb: One of the finest and most subtly affecting works of one of the twentieth century's great dramatists, bringing The Glass Menagerie to the Bedlam stage would be a fitting tribute on the 100th anniversary of Tennessee William's birth.
The play is best defined as an understated yet powerfully moving - a family saga focussing on Tom - a young, would-be poet who is struggling to support his sentimental and overbearing mother and delicate, obsessive sister.
There are hugely biographical elements to this script, and it is from this personal aspect that much of the plays power is derived. Each character is established in tremendous depth and offer different reflections on fragile human emotions.
This production will focus very much on the subtleties and depth of William's characters, working intensely on these characters and offering a great opportunity to actors. The aesthetic will be very much to create a sense of poetic realism, the play itself being presented as a dream. This will be achieved through creating a set that is both realistic and surreal, naturalistic yet exaggerated, as well as by re-instating Williams' original stage direction of using projections throughout the play.
We see this production as an exciting opportunity for Bedlam to honour Tennessee Williams, as well as dream chance to put on this really emotionally devastating and beautifully judged masterpiece.
